Thor Low-Level Laser Therapy (Photobiomodulation)

What is Low-Level Laser Therapy?

Thor low-level laser therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment used in clinical care to support tissue healing and recovery. It uses red and near-infrared light at very low energy levels. The light does not heat, burn or damage tissue, and most people feel little or nothing during treatment.

The Thor system is a medical-grade device developed by THOR Photomedicine and is used in NHS services and specialist rehabilitation clinics.

Where this treatment comes from

This therapy was developed from medical research into wound healing and recovery after surgery and cancer treatment. Researchers observed that exposure to certain wavelengths of red light was associated with better healing and less ongoing inflammation. From this work, controlled clinical devices were developed to deliver the light safely and consistently.

What Red Light Does

The red and near-infrared light passes through the skin and is absorbed by cells in the underlying tissue. This supports normal cellular activity involved in healing and inflammation control. It is not a heat treatment and it does not force tissue change. Instead, it helps tissues that are slow to settle or slow to heal function more effectively. In practical terms, this can mean less irritation, better tissue tolerance and improved recovery.

Use in Lymphatic Conditions

In lymphoedema, lipoedema and chronic oedema, tissues can become swollen, uncomfortable and firm. Thor therapy may be used alongside manual lymphatic techniques to help reduce local irritation, improve tissue comfort and make hands-on treatment more effective, particularly in dense or painful areas.

Use After Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy can leave skin and underlying tissue fragile, stiff or uncomfortable, sometimes long after treatment has finished. Thor therapy may be used to support recovery in radiotherapy-affected areas, including burns and fibrotic tissue, alongside specialist scar and soft tissue work, with the aim of improving comfort and movement.

Use After Surgery

After surgery, inflammation and scar formation can slow recovery and restrict movement. Thor therapy may be used as part of post-surgical care to support healing, improve scar quality, reduce discomfort and assist lymphatic recovery. This includes use after cancer surgery, lymph node surgery, reconstructive procedures and cosmetic surgery.

How Thor Is Used at Lymph Fusion

Thor therapy is used as part of a hands-on treatment session. It is not used on its own. It may be applied at the beginning of a session to calm sensitive or reactive tissue, or at the end to support recovery after manual work. It is used where tissue is inflamed, painful, fibrotic or slow to respond.
